In much of the world that means it is a holiday called Labour Day, and an opportunity to march or protest or whatever… theoretically in honor of the working man & woman. A couple of years ago we were in Kathmandu, Nepal and faced with a nationwide strike & protests engineered by the Maoists against the government. We struggled with the decision whether we should cancel our workshop or not. In the end it was an excellent workshop, and one that had a significant impact on the lives of the pastors, missionaries and ministry leaders who attended… some walking for well over an hour each way to do so. Our memories go back even further to the very moment in Sri Lanka when we were informed that President Premadasa was assassinated by a suicide bomber at a May Day rally. Strange how some experiences are burned into our memories, even after 19 years…

On the other hand I cannot say the words “may day” without chuckling at another memory of a funny little video clip which illustrates so beautifully the complexity of cross-cultural communications. Maybe you have seen it as well… the one where the German coast guard recruit is sitting and listening to the radio? The message is received: “Mayday, mayday, we are sinking.” And the young officer replies; “Vat are you sinking about?” It’s funny in the video, but we cannot begin to guess how often we have experienced miscommunication over the years that we have been working internationally. At least now we have learned to keep asking questions until we feel fairly sure we have understanding… and even then not to be too surprised when we don’t!

It's been quiet around here...

Trade ya Water Works for Park Place?

A couple of mornings ago, as I was brushing my teeth, the water stopped.

Now, we often find ourselves in locations around Asia when this is a very common occurence. The water stops flowing out of the tap, and you wait for it to come back on... sometimes in minutes, sometimes in a day or two... depends where you are at that time. (In Kathmandu last visit, we had running water so rarely that we were more surprised when it was working than when it wasn't!)

Faith Walk... April 2007 was the month that we left our previous ministry of 28 years, and joined International Training Partners. These past five years have become a faith walk that we never fully anticipated, or had been asked to experience before. As we have lived & ministered pretty much month to month on the resources that God has entrusted to us through our partners, we have come to understand His faithfulness a bit more fully. Not that we come close to fully understanding – and our reactions to difficulties in our life show that to be too true – but we are growing and learning as we go.

If I knew then what I know now...

We're Back!

The colors of April are...

That Hurts!

The Coromandel Express!

The Road More Traveled...
